Reval Hotel Sonya - The Newest Hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia

Challenging the Russian hotel market, Baltic chain Reval Hotels uses a bold approach to attract Russian and foreign travelers coming to St. Petersburg. Opening on November 26th, 2009, new Reval Hotel Sonya is an unusual hotel experience inspired by ”Crime & Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

”Crime & Punishment” has been called the most St. Petersburg of all novels and the perfect guide to this fascinating city; a journey from chaos, confusion and selfishness to hope, love and compassion. Being a source of inspiration for countless authors, artists and directors through the years, it is now the main influence for Reval’s first hotel in Russia.

”Being newcomers on the Russian hotel market we decide to create a Russian hotel with a strong connection to the city of St. Petersburg and its heritage” says Heikki Vanhanen, CEO of Reval Hotels. ”We wanted Reval Hotel Sonya to be like an exciting story; intriguing and unpredictable, surprising and inspiring, and a place full of nuances.”

Centrally located in St. Petersburg, this is a beautifully designed hotel where the influences from Dostoevsky’s tale are sometimes clearly, sometimes more subtly on display. Furniture, colors, patterns, art and objects have been chosen carefully to enhance the Russian atmosphere and to generate a more inspiring, lively and creative ambience.

The familiar Reval Hotels’ room types — Standard, Reval, Executive, and Suite — have been given a new concept and design in the new Reval Hotel Sonya. The 173 guest rooms are divided into four categories ”Conscience”, ”Grace”, ”Rebirth” and ”Ego”. As ”Conscience” represents the standard room level, the ”Ego” suite has been inspired by Raskolnikov’s wish to become ”a Napoleon” who exists at his own superior level.

Furthermore, every guest room has its own unique door sign with a certain sentence from a specific part of ”Crime & Punishment” in Russian and English— prompting guests to spend just a little time in contemplation of the message of a Russian literary classic.

On the first floor of the hotel, the stylish restaurant and bar “Metamorfos” invites guests to experience Russian and European cuisine, complete with striking contrasts and pleasant surprises. The menu is created in a book format — its prologue, chapters and epilogue, present dishes with fascinating stories. Studying the menu will inform diners about the 19th century, the era of Dostoevsky, and of Rodion Raskolnikov’s Saint Petersburg. Guests will discover much about Dostoevsky’s travels to Europe, and also about the development of his mind and the inner transformation of his soul. The regeneration of the soul is expressed in everything: from the variety of materials used, in the formation of the interior, the creative embodiment of recipes from modern Russian cuisine, to the surprising combinations of ingredients and flavors.

This game of contrasts serves only one purpose: to make a stay at the Reval Hotel Sonya a delight and create a memorable impression of a great city. “Reval Hotel Sonya—one of the most exciting projects we’ve been involved in,” says Erik Nissen Johansen, the creative director of the Swedish architects and identity consultants Stylt Trampoli. “Thanks to the literary heritage exemplified by the Russian writer, this hotel has a special aura, that gives a real taste of the destination. ‘Transformation’ is an important theme of the famous work by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and it is this theme that inspired the design of the Reval Hotel Sonya.

”This is not another mainstream hotel you might find anywhere in the world,” says General Manager Juris Zudovs. ”Spicing it up with something unexpected yet familiar, we created an exceptional atmosphere and found a unique position on the city’s hotel market”.
